Small Town

The Lyrics

Chorus
Raised up in a small town
Louisiana north bound
Rollin hills and hay bales
Papa’s in the field herding up cows
Honey suckle smells and kids running ‘round
Put some cornbread in your milk and wash it down
Purple hulls just sittin in the sun
Shell them peas boy until I say your done
ChorusMama and Nanny just watching after me
I’m just sittin and swinging in a tree
With my brother and sister pushing and laughing
I just wanna go higher and faster
ChorusAll my cousins and uncles and aunts
Coming on over to fry up a batch
Putting that ball right over the net
Having a good time until the sun sets
ChorusOh how I miss those times
Can’t even think about it without crying
Might be true that it’s in the past
But it’s sure true that the memories last
Chorus

The Story

Small town is Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. My grandfather, uncles, cousins, and even dad was dairy farmers. Spent a lot of time in the Rolling hills and pastures. My first memory is of smelling honey suckles and tasting them. Nanny (my Grandmother) would give us a glass of milk and cornbread as basically a meal. Purple Hull Peas are a staple in the country. We would grow them, pick them, and shell them. Obviously eat them too.We used to have a swing in the tree, and it's still there, made from hay baling belt. we could get some height with that thing. We would always have a fish fry and Nanny and Papa's house with the whole family. Played Basketball in the drive way, volleyball in the back yard, and softball in the front yard.My memories of these years are very special to me and I am blessed to have had them.

Sunday Afternoons

I remember Sundays right after Church
We would head to Grandma Ruth's and she would have us served
with some homemade ice cream and cookin' some peas
I would stare at her and she would notice me
Go give her a hug, man that's the kind of love you gonna miss
she'd give me a wink, pinch my cheek and give me a kiss
Pa's in the front room kicking up his feet
man it's hot in here and he's turning up the heat
and you don't know, you gonna miss it so
Sisters and daughters all chippin' in
and I'm wondering if I can just give 'em a hand
'cause I'm so hungry and it's hot up in this house
and Pa put another log on that furnace and I'm stepping right out
Them ol' Sunday Afternoons
with big ol' family just loving on you
and you don't know
you're gonna miss it so
On that front porch you got all the men
who's talking and laughing and watching the kids
who's running around and having the time of their lives
and Pa's just sitting in there and he's stoking that fire
Grandma Ruth is taking a break
because she's all done with the food that she made
and you don't know
you're gonna miss it so
well all us kids we ain't hungry no more
cause Grandma Ruth and the women made it so
and the men kept company and got the rest that they needed
and Pa kept us warm and at our best for the evening
That's what family is gonna do
they take what they have and they give it to you
and you don't know
you're gonna miss it so
and you don't know
you're gonna miss it so

Home

Walking down to the end of the driveway
I remember it well, it was really cold that day
My jacket made me feel like I was big and fat
I told Mama I ain't wanna go to school like that
So I cried, and I tried
to stay Home
and she said, "Son you look beautiful"
I was Sitting and wondering where my daddy was
Why did my Mama have to be the only one
Me, My brother, and sister in the old trailer
In a field, on a farm living with out a father
So I cried, and I tried
to Stay Home
and she said "Son, you know that life is beautiful"
Then a man from West Virginia came and sat beside
He showed me how to hold a spoon, yeh, He told me how to eat
Learned me how to load a gun and he showed me how to shoot
There were many things that he helped me get through
Still I cry and I try
To go Home
and he said, "Son you know that life is beautiful"
Now I got more than one and more than two
Show me what I should and what I should not do
Learned me what is right and what is wrong
As I sit at night I just wish I was HOME
Still I cry and try
to go HOME
They say, 'Son you know that life is Beautiful"
It's Beautiful

Memories

Dogs been barking out
in the backyard and I'm just about
to take them something to eat
They don't even know me
Daddy said it hit his head
knocked him right out of bed
and he probably should be dead
and you know that's just what he said
Chorus
That old family home
it ain't there no more
the concrete slab is gone too
that tree really broke right through
them old memories
of me and PawPaw going to feed
the dogs with the scraps we couldn't eat
and you know
that's what the memories are for
Maw Maw's cooking was just fine
but you can't eat the rind or the seeds
Would you bless this food for me?
We always had a full plate
Couldn't eat until we prayed
and I was sitting around with one eye open, just looking
CHORUSI remember being nervous always
No reason not to stay
I always hated them long good byes
Now Daddy's probably sitting alone
in his trailer without that home
HE DON'T KNOW THAT HOME IS STILL IN HIS SOUL
CHORUS

No Man's Land

Well there's coal mining fields
in North Louisiana
that's too damn muddy to get the coal from underneath
Natural Gas flows even deeper
So get out you drills
and pull out seeps
For the sake of my Mama
I'll go to college
get a degree in something I don't need
But it's better than dying on a rig in the ocean
Better than being in that hole underneath
And when I get out
I'll get a good job
and have no troubles again
but I was pulled to the field
where that oil it flows beneath us
where I'll swing a hammer until the end
CHORUS
Then I fell in that Oil
LIke many before
Living off of No Man's Land
and Shatter the soil(SOUL)
and take what they owe
until there ain't nothing left
In NO Man's Land
in No Man's Land
Now they putting a pipeline
down the river
from one end to the other of the land
and I've about become so sick and tired
of working for the old Oil man
CHORUSIn NO Man's Land

Went on Our Way

Washed all my clothes today
Cause they was really dirty from that red dirty clay
We was down that dirty road
We drove in the ditch when we should've been home
We was lookin at the flame in the sky
In the middle of the field, it was really high
I laughed as you'd say
What we gonna do with the rest of the day
Then a man in the flame
Pulled us out of that ditch
Then we went on our way
Many nights went like that
We would usually make it home without a scratch
We didn't die, no, we didn't then
We made it home, I guess I'd call it a win
Tell you that to tell you this
Cause we was really high with that flame in the ditch
Trouble lies in the path you take
Especially when you take it everyday
And I'll soon be done with this
But I know you won't and it's a damn ol shame
Cause I know that you will never change
Then I got a call from a friend
And he told me that you didn't make it out of bed
You passed in your sleep
And I sat in silence and in disbelief
Cause I just got a call from you
You was looking for me
And you was wondering what I was about to do
Now I know you can live one day
And then next we will be in our grave
With the man in the flame
He's pulling us into our ditch
And then we goin down our way

Patiently Wait

When the distant winds blow
From the home of another soul
and the light it shines and brightens up your day
I ain't saying that it's wrong
if you can't pick up the phone
but my heart it aches just knowing your so far away
and I can't change
the direction of the wind
or if it will come again
I can only Patiently wait
Patiently wait
So won't you come in my friend
let the wind just blow you in
so I can hold you now and touch your face
we can't give up yet
i need you with every breath
so I can wake up with you every day
I can't change
the direction of the wind
or if it will come again
I can only patiently wait
patiently wait
we can just take our time
let the sun just naturally shine
and the wind can blow in any other way
and when the rain starts to fall
i can say i gave my all
in trying to keep our souls from drifting away
but I can't change
the direction of the wind
or if it will come again
i can only patiently wait
No I can't change
the direction of the wind
or if it will come again
i can only patiently wait
patiently wait
